When Shedrack Asiegbu stepped onto the Sharks Stadium pitch for Aba Professionals offseason friendly game with Port Harcourt Professionals last Saturday, he reminded Nigerian fans why he remains one of the NPFL’s finest exports.

The 26-year-old midfielder may now ply his trade in Tanzania but has admitted that the Nigerian league still pulls at his heart.

In an exclusive chat with Footballrover, the former NPFL star opened up about life after moving to Tabora United — and why, despite calling it an upgrade, he still longs for the NPFL.

From Abia Warriors to Tanzania Football: Shedrack Asiegbu’s Journey

Asiegbu started his NPFL adventure with Abia Warriors in the 2015/16 season. After four solid years, he moved to Enugu Rangers as a free agent ahead of the 2020/21 campaign.

His time with the Flying Antelopes shaped him into a reliable figure, earning him a switch to Rivers United.

In Pride of Rivers colours, he lasted just one season before jumping at a chance to play Tanzania football with Tabora United.

Before leaving the NPFL, Asiegbu racked up 174 games, netting 16 goals and providing four assists — proof of his impact in Nigeria’s top flight.

“Never Easy Away from Home” — Asiegbu on Life Abroad

Speaking just after Aba Professionals held Port Harcourt Professionals to a dramatic 2-2 draw — despite trailing 2-0 when Asiegbu left the pitch — the midfielder shared raw thoughts on life away from home.

For the midfielder, playing abroad hasn’t been smooth sailing.

“It has never been easy to play football away from your country, even with the language and everything. But I believe it’s an upgrade to my career.”

Asiegbu’s words sum up the reality for many players chasing new heights abroad. Yet, the midfielder’s heart still beats for the Nigerian topflight.

When asked if he still misses the NPFL, Asiegbu admitted without hesitation,Yeah! I do, because it’s my (home) league, because I started my career in the NPFL. So, I miss the league so so much.”

Despite acknowledging good football abroad, he confessed, “Yeah! I miss good football, though they are playing good football there as well, but I miss good football in the Nigerian league.”

When pressed about returning to the Nigerian league any time soon, the midfielder leaves that to fate.

Ah! It’s God’s wish; I cannot say.”

During the recent off-season friendly, Asiegbu featured for Aba Professionals against Port Harcourt Pros at Sharks Stadium.

Although the Garden City side led 2-0 early in the second half, the Aba Pros fought back late to finish 2-2. Asiegbu, who started the game, was substituted in the second half while the team was still trailing.
