The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has soared two positions in the latest International Federation of Football History and Statistics (IFFHS) rankings, securing a remarkable 7th place in Africa and 73rd globally.
This significant rise marks a major improvement for the league, highlighting the positive impact of the Hon. Gbenga Elegbeleye-led Interim Management Committee (IMC), Footballrover reports.
In 2022, the NPFL stood at 77th globally. Under the IMC’s guidance, however, the league has demonstrably strengthened its competitive edge, earning plaudits from Elegbeleye himself.
Speaking from the ongoing 34th AFCON in Cote d’Ivoire, he described the ranking as “very encouraging” and a powerful motivator for further progress.
This ascent positions the NPFL among Africa’s elite leagues, nestled behind Egypt’s Premier League (13th globally), Morocco’s Botola Pro (19th globally), and Algeria’s Ligue 1 (20th globally).
The NPFL is the only West African league in the top 10, outshining regional competitors like Angola (78th globally), Zambia (79th globally), and Cote d’Ivoire (80th globally).
On the global stage, the NPFL finds itself in esteemed company, just behind the world’s top five leagues: Italy’s Serie A, England’s Premier League, Spain’s LaLiga, Brazil’s Serie A, and Germany’s Bundesliga.
This achievement signifies the NPFL’s growing international recognition and potential to attract global attention.
