Football clubs having a nickname is something we are all familiar with and the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) is not excluded from this long known tradition, which dates back to the early days of football that involves giving teams nicknames that convey a narrative.
Every team in the Nigeria Premier Football League has a moniker, some of which were given by their own followers, some of which were initially utilized as abuses by the fans of other teams, and some of which were derived from state customs or history.
The NPFL, Nigeria’s premier football league competition, has changed over time.
The league has a unique characteristic this year because the 20 participating teams are split into two groups (Group A and Group B), as opposed to simply one group in previous years.
Three of the best teams from each group will advance to the Super Six after 18 rounds of matches against one another, from which one side will be declared the NPFL23 champion.
These 20 NPFL23 teams all have unique nicknames, including some recent additions (Bendel Insurance, Doma United, and Dakkada FC), who have done well since being promoted to the league.
surprisingly, many Nigerians are unaware of the nickname of their home or favorite club. Clubs in Europe are sometimes referred to by their nickname.
Examples include the nicknames The Gunners for Arsenal, Los Blancos for Real Madrid, and The Bavarians for Bayern Munich.
