Katsina United have faced stiff penalties from the Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL) following shocking incidents during their Matchday 12 fixture against Barau FC on Saturday.
The match, intended to show top-flight football, instead descended into chaos, leaving players and officials traumatised, Footballrover reports.
Fan Violence Overshadows Katsina United vs Barau FC Showdown
The Katsina home clash against Barau took a dark turn when supporters breached security protocols and accessed restricted areas of the stadium.
Reports indicate that fans threw harmful objects onto the pitch, injuring Barau players, and harassed match officials, creating a scene that brought the game into disrepute.
The NPFL’s disciplinary committee confirmed Katsina United failed to maintain adequate security and control over their supporters, prompting strict sanctions.
The club has been ordered to play all subsequent home games at a neutral venue in Jos, behind closed doors.
NPFL Fines and Compensation Hit Katsina United Hard
Katsina United has been fined N1 million each for throwing objects onto the pitch, failing to manage supporter behavior, and tarnishing the league’s reputation, totaling N3 million.
An additional N2 million fine was imposed for failing to provide effective security.
The club must also pay N2 million each in compensation for injuries sustained by Barau FC players, damages to the away team’s buses, and the extended detainment of officials and players after the match, totaling N4 million.
Katsina United has 48 hours from the date of the notice to appeal the sanctions.
Alarming Incident Raises Safety Concerns
The violence escalated when reports emerged that a Barau FC player suffered a throat injury after scoring an equaliser against Katsina United.
The incident has intensified calls for stricter regulations to safeguard players, officials, and the integrity of the NPFL.
