Argentina are through to the 2022 FIFA World Cup semifinals after their quarterfinal match at the Lusail Stadium on Friday night ended in a 4-3 victory on penalties over the Netherlands.
Both of these teams advanced to the round of eight with various level of difficulty, with the Dutch easily defeating the Americans 3-1. Argentina managed to defeat the Socceroos 2-1, but not before Australia mounted a late comeback.
Thanks to Molina’s first goal, Argentina had the advantage in the final score at the end of the first half.

In a half that was otherwise lacking in quality, Messi, as usual, was instrumental in setting up the goal.
The PSG forward was outstanding all throughout, but the difference came from Messi’s captivating run and pass that set up Molina for the goal.
With the narrow lead, the game opened up for the second half as the two teams battled to advance to the semifinals. The Dutch were unable to have a shot on target, and Argentina were also restricted in the final third.
Lionel Messi then equalled Gabriel Batistuta’s record for most goals at the FIFA World Cupβ―in an Argentina shirt (10) in the 73rd minute of the game to double his side’s lead.
No active player has now scored more goals at the World Cup than Messi (Thomas MΓΌller has also scored 10).
Ten minutes later, Weghorst sprinted to the front post in response to a clanger of a cross from Berghuis from deep. His flick, looping header was a flawless beauty that put his team back in the game by bouncing past Emi Martinez and into the far corner.
However, there was late drama when Weghorst’s two goals gave the Netherlands parity with Argentina.
They appeared to be doomed but came back from a 2-0 deficit to force an additional 30 minutes of extra time.
After 30 minutes of extra time, the score remained 2-2, forcing penalties.
