Mercy Omokwo Leads Delta Queens to WAFU B CAF CL Final

The Asaba ladies survived an early scare in the first half from their semi-final opponent, Athletico of Cote d’Ivoire.

The qualifying clash was held at Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Edo State.

Delta Queens has second-half substitute Mercy Omokwo to thank for rescuing the team after conceding an early goal in the first half of the match.

Melisa Behinan struck in the fifth minute of the first half to give Athletico of Cote d’Ivoire a shocking lead.

All efforts by the Nigerian Women’s Club Champions to change the course of the game in the first half were thwarted by the visitors, as the half ended 0-1.

Early in the second half, in the 46th minute, Delta Queens head coach Tosan Blankson made some swift double changes to his starting line-up.

Mercy Omokwo and Mmesoma Ibeh were substituted for Temitope Owoeye and Folajomi Olabiyi.

In the 68th minute, Mercy Omokwo leveled the scores at  1-1 for Delta Queens with a thunderous shot from outside the ighteen-yard  box of their opponents.

Attacking sensation Chinaza Ogoh’s combination with Mercy Omokwo inside their opponents eighteen-yard box in the 82nd minute of the second half was blocked by a menacing Cote d’Ivoire defender as the match ended 1-1 after 90 minutes of match regulation.

In the 98th minute of first-half extra time, Mercy Omokwo completed her brace by increasing the goal tally to 2-1 in favour of Delta Queens of Asaba.

Delta Queens captain Taiwo Afolabi made it 3-1 for the Nigerian Women’s Club Champions in the 106th minute of extra time.

In the 114th minute of extra time, and against the run of play, Athletico of Cote D’Ivoire captain Joy Sunday pulled one goal back for her side to end the final score at 3-2 in favour of Delta Queens of Asaba.20230828 191846 jpg

Delta Queens of Asaba will face the winner of the Ampem Darkoa (Ghana) vs. Sam Nelly (Benin Republic) match.

The winner of this tournament will represent the WAFU B subregion at the CAF Women’s Clubs Champions League football competition later in the year.
