It was a one-sided affair at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium on Saturday. Bendel Insurance Football Club emerged victorious against Katsina United, winning 2-0 in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) Matchday 34 game.
Chisom Okereke, the Enyimba loanee striker, stole the show by scoring the opening goal in the 64th minute and claiming the Man of the Match award sponsored by Nigeria Breweries (NB), Footballrover reports.
Okereke’s goal broke the deadlock at the stadium, capitalising on a loose ball following a poor clearance by Katsina’s Kolimba Alladoum.
This goal was a huge one for Okereke, who had struggled to find his scoring form since joining Bendel Insurance this season.
He had previously scored his first goal for the team in a 1-1 draw against Rivers United in Port Harcourt.
Substitute Evans Ogbonda added a second goal for Bendel Insurance in the 78th minute, showcasing his skills with a fine solo effort from the left flank.
The first half had ended goalless, with both teams unable to convert their efforts into goals.
This victory has propelled Bendel Insurance to the 7th position on the league table, tied with Katsina United by 49 points.
Katsina United now trails Bendel Insurance in the 8th position.
In their next fixtures, Bendel Insurance will face Abia Warriors on Matchday 35, while Katsina United will host Gombe United, who are struggling to avoid relegation.
With Chisom Okereke’s performance boosting the team’s morale, this win sees Bendel Insurance seal off their position in the top-flight league.
Fans can now expect more exciting match days ahead as the battle for points continues in the NPFL.
