Loftus-Cheek looking to make England World Cup squad, says it will be amazing

After suffering a severe achilles injury in 2019, the Chelsea midfielder needed time to heal and mental resilience to go through some trying times.

Loftus-Cheek put in a lot of work during the rehabilitation process and is now beginning to fulfill the potential he displayed as a teenager.

When Chelsea looks to advance to the round of 16 of the Champions League by defeating RB Salzburg on Tuesday night, the 26-year-old is expected to start.

The midfielder, who has made 14 appearances across all leagues this year, has an opportunity to reclaim his position in England’s team.

Gareth Southgate is already familiar with the Chelsea player after bringing him to the 2018 World Cup, and Loftus-Cheek, whose contract will end in 2024, has raised his hopes of traveling to Qatar with his recent performance

Loftus-Cheek said:

It would be amazing. It would mean a lot. Going into the 2018 World Cup you see your trajectory go upwards and to be at the next World Cup if everything goes well. A lot has happened in that time and I am just happy and grateful that I am fit and healthy and playing football now consistently.”

The midfielder added that;

If I go to the World Cup it would mean the world – but that is not at the forefront of my mind now. It would be selfish to think about my personal aspirations rather than the club at the moment.”

Graham Potter and Southgate both believe the Chelsea academy graduate would be a valuable addition to the team and it appears the England boss likes him a lot.

The Chelsea head coach said;

He has really impressed me on and off the pitch. He clearly needs a good fitness level to carry his body around the pitch but the quality is there. He is putting himself into the situation that he is one of the players Gareth is looking at.”
