Super Eagles midfielder Kelechi Nwakali has made headlines once again in League One with his stunning goal that has earned him a nomination for Barnsley’s Goal of the Month award for December 2024.
The Nigeria international, known for his creativity and precision, delivered a memorable strike on his full debut, instantly capturing the hearts of Barnsley fans, Footballrover reports.
A memorable debut and an unforgettable goal
Nwakali’s first goal in English football came in style during Barnsley’s 2-1 victory over Exeter City on December 14.
The 2015 FIFA U-17 World Cup Golden Ball winner displayed his technical prowess, operating in a deep-lying midfield role.
After Josh Magennis opened the scoring for Barnsley in the 13th minute, Nwakali levelled the match just three minutes into the second half.
With impeccable timing, he struck a bouncing ball on the half-volley from the edge of the area, driving it into the bottom corner and leaving the goalkeeper helpless.
His fantastic effort now competes with goals from Davis Keillor-Dunn, Adam Phillips, and Jon Russell for Barnsley’s prestigious monthly accolade.
Rising to the occasion
Since joining Barnsley last summer on a three-year deal, Nwakali has gradually maintained his place in manager Darrell Clarke’s plans.
Although he missed pre-season and faced fitness challenges, the Arsenal academy graduate has featured in nine of Barnsley’s last 13 league matches, including three starts.
This nomination not only marks Nwakali’s growing impact at Barnsley but also highlights his potential to be a key player in the club’s promotion ambitions.
