Super Falcons forward Joy Omewa kept up her sensational scoring run this season, finding the net again for Fortuna Hjørring—but her latest strike wasn’t enough to save the Danish side from a heartbreaking exit from the UEFA Women’s Europa Cup on Wednesday night.
The Nigerian striker doubled Fortuna’s advantage early in the second half, making it 2–0 after Nikoline Nielsen’s opener.
Joy Omewa’s Goal Not Enough in Europa Cup Thriller
Yet, despite Omewa’s goal, the hosts watched their lead slip away, eventually losing 4–2 to Breidablik in extra time at the Nord Energi Arena in Denmark.
In the first leg of the tie, Omewa scored the winner in Iceland, securing a narrow 1–0 victory for Fortuna.
Her consistency has been nothing short of remarkable, as she has now scored in 14 consecutive matches, including three straight Europa League games.
Across all competitions this season, she has tallied 20 goals in 21 appearances, nine of which have come in European fixtures.
Her numbers include 12 goals and one assist in 13 Danish A-Liga games, four goals in the UEFA Women’s Champions League qualifiers, and another four in the Europa Cup.
Omewa featured for 93 minutes before being replaced by Risako Watanabe — a moment that coincided with Fortuna losing control.
Fortuna Lose Control as Breidablik Stage Ruthless Comeback
The game spiralled unexpectedly. After Nielsen set the tone with the opener in the 22nd minute, she turned provider for Joy Omewa, who coolly finished to stretch the lead. At 2–0, Fortuna appeared to be cruising. Key word: appeared.
Breidablik hit back immediately. Barbára Sól Gísladóttir pulled one back in the 49th minute, and as pressure mounted, Samantha Smith equalised in the 65th minute following a well-timed pass from Karitas Tómasdóttir.
Then came the gut punch. Deep into added time, Sarah Dyrehauge scored an own goal in the 97th minute, flipping the momentum toward the Icelandic side. Any lingering hope for Fortuna evaporated when Edith Kristjánsdóttir sealed the comeback in the 107th minute.
What seemed like a statement win turned into a tough lesson: no lead is safe until the final whistle. Breidablik’s response was cold, clinical, and devastating.
With the European chapter closed, Joy Omewa and her teammates now turn their focus back to league action, where they face table-toppers HB Køge on Saturday.
