The Super Eagles secured their qualification for the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) with a resounding 3-1 victory over Ghana in the second leg at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo, on Saturday.
The match was a decisive clash, following a goalless draw in the first leg. With the Super Eagles leading at halftime, Ismail Sodiq’s record-breaking goal set the tone for a historic win that secured their place in the tournament, Footballrover reports.
Ismail Sodiq breaks record with fastest goal
Ismail Sodiq made history in the 18th minute of the match by scoring the fastest goal by the Super Eagles in 2024.
The Remo Stars defender calmly latched onto a long ball from Nduka Junior, sprinted forward, and fired a composed strike past the Ghanaian goalkeeper.
This goal not only marked a personal milestone for Sodiq but also tied him with Victor Osimhen’s 13th-minute goal against São Tomé & Príncipe in 2023, both of which were scored in Uyo.
Sodiq’s early strike set the stage for a first-half blitz from the Super Eagles.
Just three minutes after his goal, Nigeria doubled their lead when Nduka Junior bent a low corner kick into the net after Ghanaian defenders failed to clear the ball.
The Eagles were in full control, and by the 25th minute, the lead was extended to 3-0 when Saviour Isaac intercepted a poor pass from the Ghanaian goalkeeper and slotted it home with ease.
Ghana’s late response falls short
Ghana managed to pull one back in the 73rd minute with a brilliant strike from Stephen Amankuna.
However, the damage had already been done, and the Nigerian B team maintained their commanding lead.
Despite the late goal, Nigeria’s 3-1 victory sealed their qualification for the CHAN, which will take place in Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania in 2025.
With this emphatic win, the B Eagles have confirmed their place in the upcoming continental competition, making it a memorable achievement for the team and Ismail Sodiq, whose record-breaking goal added to the significance of the victory.
The Super Eagles have secured their spot in the African Nations Championship (CHAN) for the fourth time (2014, 2016, 2018, and 2024), marking the tournament’s 8th edition.
