Friday Ubi Etim appears to be the most recent Nigerian player to have a breakthrough season in the Portuguese league after scoring his first goal of the season for F.C. Vizela in the Primeira Liga and he is highly motivated to keep working hard.

Etim made his grand entrance into the spotlight after scoring a goal in FC Vizela’s 2-0 away victory over Pacos Ferreira on Sunday night.

The first half of the match ended in a scoreless tie as a result of both side’s inability to find the back of the net at the Estádio da Mata Real.

Coach Alvaro Pacheco of Vizela made the brilliant decision to bring in Etim for the second half in order to liven things up. Three minutes after coming on, the young player scored the game’s opening goal.

Igor Vekic, the goalie for Paco, was beaten by Etim’s superb right-footed drive before Bruno Wilson scored what proved to be the winner, a stunner header to give the visitors a 2-0 victory.

Etim’s performance grabbed media attention as he had only played three times with Vizela’s first team before the match, but managed to perform admirably well.

Etim played 45 minutes, winning five duels and completing five of his eleven passes (including one crucial pass).

The 20-year-old finished the game with the man of the match award after also producing one significant opportunity.

Etim will still need to improve his technique as he missed two significant opportunities despite getting into advantageous positions and using his excellent understanding of the game to do so.

Etim scored his first goal in the top division of Portugal on Saturday, but he has three goals and three assists in five league games for Vizela’s U23 club in the reserve league.

Due to the top flights currently on World Cup break, Etim now has enough room to develop his abilities with the U23 team in preparation for a potential game tine with the first team when the league resumes.

The Portuguese Primera Liga has featured some excellent Nigerian players in the past and present, and this trend is expected to continue with the rise of the youngster from Nigeria.
