Nigerian forward Gift Orban is facing backlash from Lyon fans after a seemingly innocent Instagram comment sparked a wave of frustration.
After Lyonâs 2-2 Ligue 1 draw with Auxerre in Ligue 1 over the weekend, Orban left a congratulatory message for former teammate Sinaly DiomandĂ©, who scored a crucial goal against Lyon, Footballrover reports.

The comment, intended as a friendly gesture, didnât go well with Lyon supporters, who were practically still unsettled by the outcome of the match.
The game saw Diomandé, a former Lyon player now with Auxerre, score against his old team, adding tension to an already intense encounter.
Afterward, DiomandĂ© shared a celebratory Instagram post, and Orban decided to drop a comment saying âTopâ and a flame emoji. To Lyonâs loyal fans.
Unfortunately for the Nigerian star, his message felt like a slight, adding fuel to their frustration with Orban.
Orban tender apology to Lyon fans
Realising the uproar, Orban quickly apologised via Instagram stories, clarifying that his comment was nothing more than friendly encouragement for an old teammate.
He emphasised his loyalty to Lyon and expressed regret for the misunderstanding, hoping to restore harmony with the fans.
“Excuse me, OL fans; I made this comment by mistake. It’s just to encourage my friend. I didn’t even see that this is the photo from our match. We work hard to win matches and trophies. For OL, I’m sorry. Thanks,” Gift wrote.
Despite his statement, the timing of the incident hasnât helped his case, as Orban has struggled to secure consistent playtime with Lyon.
With Lyonâs upcoming clash against LOSC, Orban will be hoping to have an opportunity to prove his dedication on the field.
