Frank Onyeka has spoken openly about the pressure facing the Super Eagles as they prepare for crucial World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and South Africa.
The Brentford midfielder admitted that Nigeria are “in a difficult position” but stressed that the players remain united, confident, and determined to turn things around, Footballrover reports.
Frank Onyeka Confident Eagles Can Bounce Back
Nigeria’s September schedule begins with Rwanda on September 6 in Uyo before a tough away clash against South Africa at the Free State Stadium three days later.
With only four matches left in Group C, anything short of victory could shatter Nigeria’s World Cup dreams.
The reverse fixtures earlier in the campaign saw the national team defeat Rwanda 2-0 in Kigali, thanks to a Victor Osimhen brace, while Lazio star Fisayo Dele-Bashiru salvaged a 1-1 draw against South Africa in Uyo.
Onyeka admitted the team has underperformed in past qualifiers but remains upbeat about the challenge ahead.
— “I know it’s not easy feeling this way, especially after the past games. We’re in a difficult position now, but as a team we are doing everything we can,” Onyeka said.
Super Eagles Preparing for Make-or-Break Battles
The stakes are high for manager Eric Chelle’s side, who trail group leaders South Africa by six points.
Pressure is mounting ahead of next Tuesday’s clash against Hugo Broos’ technically gifted Bafana Bafana.
Despite the tension, Onyeka believes the squad has the right mindset.
— “We are confident, we are training hard, and the coaches as well as everyone in the squad believe we can come out with good results,” he added.
Since Wednesday, the manager has intensified training sessions with the arrivals of key players, including Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, Tolu Arokodare, Christantus Uche, and Raphael Onyedika.
With four fixtures left, Nigeria’s path to the 2026 FIFA World Cup may be decided by how they perform this month.
The upcoming double-header against Rwanda and South Africa could define the Super Eagles’ campaign.
