Coach Whyte Ogbonda and his Rivers Angels team arrived in Awka on Saturday, brimming with confidence as they look set for their semi-final showdown against Delta Queens in the President Federation Cup.
Having faced Delta Queens in the Nigeria Women’s Premier League this season—drawing in Asaba and winning in Port Harcourt—the eight-time champions of the Federation Cup are no strangers to their upcoming opponents, Footballrover reports.
However, Coach Whyte Ogbonda has emphasised that Sunday’s South South Derby is a distinct challenge.
Coach Whyte Ogbonda expressed confidence that his team would win and advance to the finals, adding that Sunday’s game is different from their previous matches.
He praised the Rivers State government’s massive support for the team’s preparations, in spite of the challenging economic climate, and admitted the pressure to succeed.
Coach Ogbonda also highlighted the mental and psychological readiness of his team, attributing their preparedness to the backing they’ve received from the state government.
“We are mentally and psychologically ready, thanks to the tremendous support from the Rivers State government,” Ogbonda said.
The crucial match between the Jewels of Rivers and Delta Queens is set to kick off at 9 a.m. at the Awka Stadium.
The winner will face the victor of the Naija Ratels vs. Remo Stars Ladies semi-final on June 29.
The PH ladies will be coming into this semi-final clash with high morale, having dominated NWFL champions Edo Queens with a 4-1 victory to secure their quarter-final spot, followed by a resounding 5-0 win over Osun Babes in the semi-final stage.
