Nigerian football legend Onome Ebi has traded the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) for the Israeli Women’s Premier League, signing with Bnot Netanya FC.

The 40-year-old defender, who captained both the Super Falcons and Naija Ratels, made the announcement on her social media platforms on Wednesday, Footballrover reports.

Ebi’s departure from the Naija Ratels comes after just three appearances in the 2023–24 NWFL season.

While her time with the club was brief, she did leave her mark, scoring an assist in her debut match against the Nasarawa Amazons.

This latest move marks another chapter in Ebi’s illustrious career, which has seen her play in Belarus, China, and Spain.

Her decision to return to the NWFL at the start of the season was met with much fanfare, as many hoped her experience and leadership would inspire a new generation of Nigerian footballers.

However, it appears Ebi’s time inspiring the young stars has come to an end as she sets her sights on new challenges in Israel.

Bnot Netanya FC, currently sitting in 8th place in the Israeli Women’s Premier League, will no doubt be hoping to benefit from Ebi’s vast experience and talent.

Ebi’s departure is sure to raise questions as to why she decided to dump the NWFL so early.

With one of its most iconic players heading overseas, the league will need to find new ways to attract and retain top talent.

However, for Ebi, this move is yet another chance to continue playing at the highest level and add another chapter to her already remarkable story.

Only time will tell what the future holds for Ebi, but one thing is for sure: she is a true Nigerian football legend who has inspired generations of players.
