Nigerian defender Ebube Duru marked a sensational debut to his Sønderjyske Fodbold career in a Danish Cup match on Wednesday, after signing a three-year deal following a successful trial with the club.
The 25-year-old, who was a free agent for an entire season after leaving Rivers United, made his debut in Sønderjyske’s starting XI against Solrød at the Solrød Sports Centre, Footballrover reports.
Duru’s debut couldn’t have gone any better, as Sønderjyske stormed to an emphatic 7-0 victory.
The match was a dream start for Duru, who slotted seamlessly into the team and helped his new side claim one of their biggest-ever cup wins.
Of the seven goals, three came from the penalty spot, which shows Sønderjyske’s dominance throughout the match.

Reflecting on his debut, Duru expressed his excitement:
“For me, I will say it was an amazing feeling, you know, being part of this great club and making my debut today. I’m super proud of myself, and I’m super proud of the team. I love how they welcomed me, and this win is big for us. I’ll use it to better myself and push to give my all for the team.”
Despite admitting some early nerves, Duru quickly adapted to the match. He credits his teammates’ communication and encouragement for helping him settle in.
“Playing my first game for the team was not easy at the start, but with the encouragement from the rest of the players, I got the feeling, and I was in the game. I could feel better as the game went on, so I think it was a great feeling for me, and like I said earlier, I’ll work on that to give my all for the club,” he told the club media.
Duru’s journey to Sønderjyske has been one of persistence and determination.
After his departure from the Garden City side and spending a season without a club, the Nigerian defender earned his place in the Danish side through a lengthy but successful trial period.
Now that his hard work has paid off, he’s fully committed to helping the team in their fight to remain in the Super Liga.
“Yeah, I’ve been on trial with the team for some time now. I’ve been trying my best, pushing; you know, it has not been easy though, but at the end I think the hard work and everything paid off. I’m so happy to sign a contract with the team. I can tell you for the fact, I love it here. I can tell you we have a lot of players that are willing to work to give that all to the club,” he said.
The ex-Lobi Stars defender highlighted the strong morale within the squad and their shared goal of not just playing in the Super Liga, but staying there and giving their all.
Duru’s versatility, particularly his attacking prowess and ability to score from set-pieces, adds another layer to Sønderjyske’s tactical options.
The Super Eagles defender is confident that, with time, he’ll fully adjust to the team’s style of play and make a significant impact.
“I know that with time, I’ll build myself, work with the coach’s instructions, and follow the game because it’s quite different from where I come; the pattern here is different. I’ll adapt to the pattern, and with time, which I know I’m already getting there, you’ll see the full Duru coming out to give his best for the team,” he concluded.
With this stunning debut, Ebube Duru has made his intentions clear: to raise the bar for himself and his teammates and to help ensure Sønderjyske’s survival in the Danish Super Liga.
