The visitors came into the game with high momentum but only took Nasarawa United just five minutes into the match to find the back of the net, thanks to Sunday Okereke, who gave the home team the advantage.

Ten minutes into the contest, Uche Onwuansanya forced goalkeeper Danlani Umar to make a stunning save before his through pass put Akuneto in scoring position 22 minutes later, but the forward’s shot was blocked by a Nasarawa Utd defender.

Rivers United kicked off the second half in search of a goal after the home team took a 1-0 lead into the half. Four minutes into the half, Ishaq Kayode found himself in the box and decided to go solo, but his shot was blocked for a corner kick.

After 78 minutes, as the visitors continued to press for an equalizer, coach Stanley Eguma takes the decision to freshen things up by substituting Ishaq Kayode for Sikiru Olatunbosun.

The switch paid off as the Rivers United’s super sub scored a well-deserved equalizer to revive the contest.

However, their joy was short-lived as Nasarawa United won a penalty in 90th minute, which Tochukwu Udeh expertly scored to retake the lead and grab all three points for his side after the final whistle.

In the meantime, Rivers United’s five-year wait to win the title came to an end on Saturday when they were officially crowned the NPFL champions thanks to second-placed Plateau United who suffered a crushing 2-1 defeat at Akwa United.

With three games remaining, Rivers United have an unreachable 10-point lead over Plateau United courtesy of the outcome of the game at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo.

Before Rivers United’s encounter against Nasarawa United on matchday 35, a guard of honor was mounted for the Wike Boys.
