The defence had a quiet day, despite dominating possession but failed to be clinical in front of goal.

However, after a brilliant play by Havertz results in him crossing into the area, Al Hilal fails to clear it, and Lukaku finishes the job by slamming the ball into the net 33 minutes into the game.

Kai Havertz showed good skill on the byline before flicking the ball into the centre, where an Al Hilal defender let the ball to bounce off him straight into the path of Lukaku three yards out, and swept home to put the Blues ahead.

In the second half, Havertz nearly extended Chelsea’s advantage with a slick move on the flank, but his chip rebounds off the outside of the post.

Ziyech again came close to scoring, but Al-Hilal goalkeeper Al-Mayouf denied his volley with a fantastic save.

Marega had Al-Hilal’s finest chance of the game after being passed in behind Chelsea’s defence, but Kepa got off his line swiftly to deny the ex-Porto player in a one-on-one position.

With the introduction of two strikers, Carillo and Michael, the Saudi side went all-out for an equaliser, but the game ended in favour of Thomas Tuchel’s side.
