Nigerian football legend Brown Ideye has thrown a hard truth at local fans: “The NPFL will never get better if all we talk about is the EPL and La Liga.”

With his blunt words, Ideye has sparked a fresh debate about why the NPFL struggles while foreign leagues enjoy endless hype in Nigeria, Footballrover reports.
Brown Ideye: ‘We Must Promote NPFL or Keep Hiding in Shame’
In a post on his X platform, the former Super Eagles striker didn’t hold back.

“We keep saying we are the best in Africa, but sometimes we have to hide our faces in shame,” Ideye stated.
With a career that took him from West Bromwich Albion to Dynamo Kyiv, Olympiacos, and Malaga, the 36-year-old knows what top-level football looks like.
After a brief spell with Enyimba, Ideye is frustrated that the Nigerian topflight still fights for relevance while fans endlessly debate EPL and La Liga results.

NPFL Needs Better Branding, Not Just Complaints
“You want foreigners to value your country’s players; what have you done to promote them?” he asked pointedly.
For Ideye, it’s clear: the real work begins with local clubs and the league’s leadership.

Better branding, stronger media work, and fan engagement are what can make the Nigeria Premier Football League shine.
Fans don’t flock to the EPL and La Liga by accident—they are drawn by quality, marketing, and consistency.
It’s time for the Nigerian League to follow suit or keep losing the battle for hearts and screens at home.
For Ideye, it’s no longer enough to boast about being Africa’s best if the NPFL stays under-promoted.
Real change must come from within—clubs, players, and fans must be proud of their league, talk about it, and push it to higher levels.
