The Super Eagles delivered one of their most convincing performances at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 as they swept aside Mozambique to seal a place in the quarter-finals.
The Eagles’ 4–0 win over Mozambique stands as Nigeria’s joint-biggest victory in AFCON history, matching the 4–0 group-stage triumph against South Africa in 2004, Footballrover reports.
AFCON 2025: Super Eagles dominate Mozambique with ruthless efficiency
It also marked the first time the Eagles have won four consecutive matches since their opening four games at the 2023 AFCON in January 2024.
Former Manchester United forward Odion Ighalo was among those impressed after the commanding victory, praising the intensity and control shown by the three-time champions.
Playing at the Complexe Sportif de Fès on Monday night, the Super Eagles produced a dominant display to defeat the Mambas of Mozambique 4–0 in their Round of 16 clash.
Eric Chelle’s side controlled the match from the opening minutes and never allowed their opponents to settle.
Victor Osimhen led the charge with a well-taken brace, while Ademola Lookman and Akor Adams also found the net as Nigeria’s attack clicked effortlessly against a struggling Mozambique defence.
Super Eagles intensity draws praise from Odion Ighalo
Ex-Nigerian international Ighalo praised the Super Eagles for maintaining their tempo throughout the contest. Speaking on Supersport, he noted that Nigeria’s ability to sustain the same pace from start to finish stood out.
Ighalo highlighted how the Super Eagles continued to press and attack even after building a comfortable lead, describing the overall performance as exceptional.
He added that it was rare to see Nigeria play with such authority and consistency in recent years, making the result even more pleasing.
“They are in the quarterfinals, and the way they did it today was exceptional,” Ighalo said.
“From start to finish, they dominated the game. And one thing I like about this game again is the same pace they used from the start; the same pace they’re using to finish the game; even after four-zero, they were still going.
“I’ve not seen the Eagles play like this in the last few years. So I’m happy about this game.”
The emphatic win sends the Super Eagles into the quarter-finals of AFCON 2025, where they will face the winner of the Round of 16 tie between Algeria and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
