Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman had an impressive performance for his team, Atalanta, but it was not enough to secure their first trophy in 13 years.
The Nigerian international was almost in hot tears as he watched his side fall to a narrow 1-0 defeat against Juventus in the Coppa Italia final at the Stadio Olimpico, Footballrover reports.
The Nigerian forward, who returned to Atalanta’s starting lineup, had a chance to equalise in the 26th minute, but his strike went wide.
He had another effort saved in the 51st minute and hit the upright in the 79th minute, but luck was not on Atalanta’s side.
Juventus scored early through Dusan Vlahovic’s close-range flick barely four mimutes into the game, and despite Atalanta’s pressing, they couldn’t find the equaliser.
Juventus won their record-extending 15th Coppa Italia, while Atalanta’s search for their first trophy since 2011 continues.
Recall that Lookman put out an outstanding display in the semifinal, where he scored and assisted against Fiorentina.
But this time around, he failed to shoulder Atalanta, as they were completely denied victory in the final.
Atalanta still have a chance of breaking their trophy drought when they head into the Europa League final with Bundeliga Champions Bayer Leverkusen on Wednesday, May 22.
But first, they must visit Lecce this Saturday at the Stadio Comunale Via del Mare for another action-packed Serie A showdown.
