In Sunday’s Serie A match against Monza, Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen failed to connect on a shot as Napoli fell to their first league defeat since becoming Serie A champions.
Victor Osimhen fire blank as Napoli fall to crushing defeat vs Serie A newcomers
Monza earned a well-deserved victory over Napoli, who lost for just the second game this season on the road.
In the opening 45 minutes, the home team played better and took the lead thanks to Mota.
Augusto provided Pessina with a swift throughball as Caprari sprinted down the left wing and found him in the centre of the box.
The captain had a one-on-one opportunity with the goaltender and could have shot, but instead he threaded a pass to Mota for an easy goal.
Just before halftime, Petagna had the opportunity to double their lead, but they fumbled in the midst of the box and the ball went high.
He quickly made up for it following the restart, though.
Mota’s shot rebounded and Petagna was the recipient. He took control of the ball and curled his shot into the bottom corner.
Napoli unleashed players onto the field but was unsuccessful in scoring.
Before Osimhen sent the ball sailing over the crossbar, Olivera had a header denied. Simeone and Raspadori’s efforts were also safeguarded.
Monza has lost only once in their previous 11 games as they keep up their strong run of play.
The promoted team is now in the top part of the table, and they dominated the game the entire time.
They will play at Sassuolo next, while Napoli will host Inter in their subsequent Serie A game after missing the opportunity to earn their 15th away victory of the year.
