Ademola Lookman delivers but it ends in heartbreak
However, Atlético ultimately surrendered their slim lead, falling to a 3-2 defeat at the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu.
This strike marked the 28-year-old winger’s second La Liga goal for Atlético, bringing his total goal contributions for the club to eight (five goals and three assists) in 14 appearances.
Broken down across all competitions, Lookman has registered two goals in La Liga, two goals and two assists in the Copa del Rey, and one goal and one assist in European competition.
The Nigerian forward, who has now scored against both Barcelona and Real Madrid, featured for 57 minutes before being replaced by Alexander Sørloth.
Real Madrid’s thrilling victory over Atlético Madrid was driven by a brace from Vinícius Júnior that ended his goal drought against their city rivals.
In a clash of managerial styles between Diego Simeone and Álvaro Arbeloa, Real started aggressively but fell behind before halftime when Lookman swept home Giuliano Simeone’s assist.
The match exploded after the break. Within ten minutes of the restart, Real overturned the deficit through a Vini Jr penalty and a Federico Valverde strike.
Atlético briefly levelled the scoring via a spectacular 25-yard rocket from Nahuel Molina, but Vini Jr swiftly responded with a magnificent curled winner.
Despite Valverde receiving a late red card and Atlético rattling the woodwork, Real held firm.
The win leaves Real just four points behind league leaders Barcelona, while Atlético remains fourth.
Awaziem assist falls short in Ligue 1 clash
Over in French Ligue 1, Chidozie Awaziem’s solid performance wasn’t enough to save Nantes.
Despite bagging an assist, the Super Eagles defender had to watch his side throw away a slim lead to suffer a home defeat against Strasbourg.
Awaziem set up his side’s second goal of the Round 27 clash to put the hosts 2–1 up. However, Nantes couldn’t hold on, ultimately falling 3–2 at the Stade de la Beaujoire.
This marks the 29-year-old’s second assist of the campaign, his first coming back on January 25 in a 4–1 loss to OGC Nice.
Today’s assist takes his total goal contributions for the season to three (one goal and two assists).
Vahid Halilhodžić’s return as Nantes head coach ended in the home defeat to RC Strasbourg, despite an energetic performance from the relegation-threatened hosts.
Nantes started fast, taking an early lead through a Dehmaine Tabibou strike. Strasbourg equalised just before halftime when Maxi Oyedele marked his first start with a sublime finish.
Nantes restored their lead early in the second half via Matthis Abline but missed chances to seal the win, including Ignatius Ganago hitting the post.
Strasbourg’s introduction of Joaquín Panichelli proved decisive. The Argentine striker equalised with his 15th goal of the season before scoring a late winner to complete the comeback.
The loss leaves Nantes five points adrift of the relegation play-off spot, while Strasbourg extended their unbeaten run to nine matches, closing in on the top six.
