Despite this being the first meeting between these two teams on the pitch, Washington Spirit showed no mercy in this Group B game.

Recall that the Spirit secured a successful debut in the Women’s Champions Cup in matchweek one with a 7-0 victory over Alianza Women FC.

The breakthrough came in the 31st minute when Tara McKeown coolly slotted home a long-range strike from outside the 18-yard box, leaving the goalkeeper completely helpless.

Ten minutes later, Heather Stainbrook doubled the advantage with a cool header, finishing off Courtney Brown’s clever setup to the bottom left of the post.

Her second attempt was even better, taking a wicked deflection into the roof of the net, thanks to Croix Bethune’s assist.

With the victory in the bag, Abiodun and her Spirit teammates will now return to NWSL fixtures, where they will face Seattle Reign FC on Sunday, 7 September.
