Finidi George has laid down a clear challenge to his Rivers United squad ahead of their Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) matchday 3 clash with El Kanemi Warriors.

Speaking after Tuesday morning’s training session, the coach urged his players to treat the coming fixture as a must-win if they hope to lift the league title this season, Footballrover reports.

The former Super Eagles boss was blunt with his message:

— “If you want to win the league, these are the matches you must win. If you don’t lose, at least pick a point. Let’s put our minds in the game. If you do well in the first round, you’ll have the chance to win the league.”

He went further to stress the physical and mental demands of the NPFL:

— “Nigerian league is one of the toughest in the world. There are so many reasons, and this travelling is one of them.”

Beyond tactics, Finidi also advised his players to prioritise their health and recovery. He encouraged them to eat well, take more vitamins, and respect their bodies.

— “It’s your body; take care of it,” he said.

Rivers United vs El Kanemi Warriors: A Battle of Equals

The Pride of Rivers started their 2025/26 NPFL campaign with a 1-1 draw against Remo Stars before grinding out a 1-0 victory over Kwara United on matchday two.

Meanwhile, El Kanemi began strongly with a 2-0 win over Bendel Insurance before being held to a goalless draw away at Ikorodu City.

Both clubs head into Sunday’s encounter on four points each, making this a crucial battle to maintain momentum in the league.

El Kanemi will be relying on their Maiduguri home advantage to push for maximum points.

But United will see value in snatching even a draw against such a tough opponent.

Head-to-Head: Rivers United Hold the Edge

History slightly favours the Garden City side in this fixture.

In their last five meetings, the Port Harcourt outfit have won twice and drawn twice, while El Kanemi Warriors have managed only one victory.
