Super Falcons forward Gift Monday delivered when it mattered most, scoring a decisive header to fire Washington Spirit into the NWSL Semifinals after a tense quarterfinal battle against Racing Louisville at Audi Field on Saturday night.
It was a tight contest from the start, with both teams struggling to find their rhythm in a cagey first half that ended goalless, Footballrover reports.
Gift Monday Delivers with Powerful Header
The breakthrough finally came in the 73rd minute when Gift Monday rose highest in the box to meet Rosemunde Kouassi’s pinpoint cross, powering home a brilliant header to hand Washington Spirit a crucial lead.
For Monday, it was a welcome return to the scoresheet after three league matches without a goal contribution.
Her last NWSL strike came on September 28, when she netted a stunning hat-trick in a 4–0 win over Houston Dash.
The 23-year-old Nigerian international now has 12 goal contributions this season — nine goals and two assists in the NWSL, plus one goal in the CONCACAF Women’s Champions Cup.
Spirit Survive Late Drama to Reach Semifinals
Despite Monday’s header, the drama was far from over. Racing Louisville’s Kayla Fischer struck deep into stoppage time to level the score at 1–1 and force extra time.
The quarterfinal clash ultimately went to penalties, where goalkeeper Aubrey Kingsbury emerged as the hero — saving two spot-kicks and watching another crash against the crossbar as Washington Spirit triumphed 3–1 in the shootout.
That result means Washington Spirit have now extended their unbeaten run against Racing Louisville to 11 games (6 wins, 5 draws), maintaining their dominance and booking a well-deserved spot in the NWSL Semifinals.
