Super Eagles’ Head Coach, José Peseiro, has extended invitations to two home-based players, in addition to a goalkeeper and defender from Rivers United, for the upcoming 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Sierra Leone.
The qualifier, scheduled for June 18, will see the Super Eagles face the Leone Stars in a crucial Group A match.
Victor Sochima, the goalkeeper for Rivers United, and Ebube Duru, a defender, have been selected to join the team.
Peseiro has also called up Olorunleke Ojo from Enyimba International and Divine Nwachukwu from Bendel Insurance, both of whom are home-based players.
The squad for the qualifying match also includes notable players such as goalkeeper Adebayo Adeleye, defender William Ekong, midfielder Alex Iwobi, and forward Moses Simon.
The 23-man list further comprises Kenneth Omeruo, Zaidu Sanusi, Calvin Bassey, Oluwasemilogo Ajayi, and Bright Osayi-Samuel.
The remaining players on the list are midfielders Wilfred Ndidi and Frank Onyeka, as well as forwards Samuel Chukwueze, Taiwo Awoniyi, and Kelechi Iheanacho.
With nine points from four matches, the Super Eagles currently lead their qualification group, followed by Guinea Bissau’s Wild Dogs, who have accumulated seven points.
The Leone Stars, who gave the Eagles a tough challenge in Abuja but eventually succumbed to a 2-1 defeat, currently have five points.
On the other hand, Sao Tome and Principe, the Super Eagles’ opponents in the series’ final game in September, sit at the bottom with just one point.
The match between Nigeria and Sierra Leone will take place at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Stadium in Monrovia at 5 p.m. on June 18.
Due to the absence of approved international stadiums in Sierra Leone, the Leone Stars will be hosting their matches in Liberia.
