Coach Carmine Nunziata of Italy U-20 team acknowledged Uruguay’s superior performance in the final match of the World Cup tournament but heaped much of the blame on poor pitch for losing the title.
However, he emphasized that his team’s commendable journey throughout the competition should not be overlooked despite the loss.
Nunziata admitted that playing a series of matches is challenging, and in this instance, the champions proved to be better, ultimately deserving the title.
In a surprising turn of events, Uruguay secured a 1-0 victory over Italy on Sunday, securing their first-ever Under-20 World Cup championship.
This triumph marks the end of a remarkable four consecutive wins by European teams in the tournament.
Luciano Rodríguez scored the decisive goal in the 86th minute, heading the ball from close range, sealing Uruguay’s well-deserved victory.
Throughout the match, Uruguay displayed dominance over Italy, solidifying their claim to the title.

Notably, Uruguay’s defense played a pivotal role, conceding a mere three goals in the entire tournament, all of which occurred during their match against England in the group stage.
“The pitch has penalized any player who has more skills. We had an incredible run. This match doesn’t cancel what we have done, playing all these matches is not easy. They were better than us today.” – Nunziata said.
This victory for Uruguay follows Argentina’s World Cup triumph in December, breaking the sequence of European team victories.
