The Flying Eagles fought hard today in the second Group D match of the 2023 U-20 World Cup to defeat debutants Dominican Republic, 2-1, at Estadio Malvinas Argentinas, Mendoza.Flying Eagles fight back to beat Dominican Republic in 2023 U-20 World Cup

The Dominican Republic shocked theĀ  Eagles with an early goal in the 21st minute of the first half of the match through a penalty kick scored by Edison Azcona.

The Nigerian youngsters equalized in the 31st minute of the half through a corner kick that sailed into the net after bouncing off a Dominican Republic defender’s leg to end the first half with a 1-1 scoreline.

Samson Adeniran Lawal put the Flying Eagles 2-1 ahead in the 70th minute of the second half after profiting from a defensive error by the defense of the Dominican Republic.

The 2-1 victory against the Dominican Republic has guaranteed the Nigerian side their first three (3) points of the group and puts the team in good standing to face their second Group D opponent, Italy, on Wednesday, May 24, 2023, at the same venue, by 7:00 p.m. Nigerian time.

The Nigeria vs. Dominican Republic match recorded the second-highest attendance in the FIFA U20 World Cup so far, 21,647.
