Akwa United’s recent struggles in the Nigeria National League (NNL) have raised a lot of dust among fans online, with some questioning the club’s performance despite significant financial support.

The discussion intensified after their 2-0 defeat to Sporting Lagos in matchday 5, leaving the club in sixth place in the Southern Conference B table, Footballrover reports.

Victor Sochima Defends Akwa United Against Allocation Criticism

Amid the controversy, Super Eagles goalkeeper Sochima has defended Akwa United, urging fans to judge football without bias.

The online debate started off when a fan, Nsidibe Akpan, highlighted Akwa United’s N45 million monthly allocation and compared it with Rangers International of Enugu, who operate in the NPFL on N22 million.

Akpan suggested that Akwa United should be performing better given their higher funding.

Sochima responded to the criticism, highlighting that financial allocations do not automatically guarantee victories.

Responding to claims that the club should be winning more matches due to their N45 million monthly funding, Victor pointed out that even top-funded teams like Kano Pillars are not consistently leading the NPFL.

The former Rivers United shot-stopper stressed the importance of evaluating football objectively, without letting emotions or tribal loyalties interfere.

Sochima reminded fans that every club experiences transitional and challenging periods regardless of their history, titles, or league status.

“So because of the allocation, they should be winning every match home and away, right? If that is the case, Kano Pillars are one of the highest-paying clubs with the biggest allocation in the country. Why are they not topping the NPFL?? Judge football without emotions and tribalism…

Victor’s response highlights the reality that financial backing alone does not guarantee results and encourages fans to consider the broader context of team development and league competitiveness.

Akwa United’s NNL Struggles and Upcoming Fixture

After matchday 5, Akwa United sit in sixth place with seven points, three behind leaders Sporting Lagos.

Their record so far includes two wins, two losses, and one draw, scoring five goals while conceding the same number.

The team will now focus on improving their form as they prepare to host Osun United in matchday 6.

The home clash presents an opportunity to turn their season around and start climbing the Southern Conference B table.
