Ex-Super Eagles coach Finidi George has declared that he remains unconcerned about the Nigerian Premier Football League (NPFL) table standings.
His confidence is evident as his team, Rivers United, continues its impressive unbeaten streak after five matches in the top tier, Footballrover reports.
George made this statement following Rivers United’s latest victory over Akwa United, which sealed their strong start to the season.
The Pride of Rivers triumphed with a 2-1 win during a tense matchday five clash at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in Port Harcourt.
The scoring began in the 31st minute when Stephen Manyo found the net with a precise half-volley from a corner kick delivered by Okon Aniekeme.
Akwa United responded vigorously after halftime, with Friday Apollo levelling the score shortly after the break.
However, Ndifreke Effiong emerged as the hero for Rivers United, netting the decisive goal just five minutes before the final whistle.
This victory marked their fourth consecutive win in the league, complemented by one draw, propelling them to the top of the table with a slim point advantage over second-placed Remo Stars and third-placed Enyimba.
Finidi George’s focus on performance over rankings
In his post-match press conference, when asked about his awareness of the league’s leading teams, Finidi George reiterated his focus.
He emphasised that he is not fixated on the league standings at this moment.
Instead, he is determined to concentrate on his team’s development and performance, game by game.
“I dont watch the league table at the moment. I’m not watching what others are doing, I’m just watching what we are doing, we are focused on every game that comes our way and see how we can take them,” Finidi George said.
While he acknowledged that a top-three position would be ideal after five matches, he remains committed to enhancing his team’s execution on the pitch without dwelling on the performances of rival teams.
“But I know where we should be. Maybe, first three, which is not bad after five games,” Finidi added.
