The Super Eagles have long been a source of pride for Nigeria, yet recent performances have left many fans questioning the true commitment of some of the players.
Despite impressive club displays, the national team’s recent outings have been far from stellar, Footballrover reports.
What could be behind these disappointing performances that have left Nigerians scratching their heads?
Abiodun Olugbemiga Obafemi, an Olympic gold medallist and former defender for Fortuna Düsseldorf, did not hold back in his critique of the Super Eagles.
Super Eagles’ disappointing performances: A call for consistency
Speaking in an interview with Brila FM, he voiced his concern over the lacklustre effort seen by certain players during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
This defeat marked a historic first for the Super Eagles.
Obafemi pointed out a disturbing trend where some Super Eagles players appear unable to replicate their club performances when representing Nigeria.
This discrepancy has become a pressing issue, as the national team’s success hinges on the same level of dedication and competitive spirit players show with their clubs.
Obafemi’s frustrations were palpable as he expressed how some players seem to selectively choose when to deliver their best performances, a habit he believes is detrimental to the team’s overall success.
The former international highlighted that the lack of consistency between club and country displays is concerning.
“We expected so much from these guys based on their performances with their clubs, but when they come to Nigeria, they do what they cannot in their teams.
“It’s a very big concern. They must be competitive. I don’t understand why they are selecting games,” he said in an interview with Brila.
Obafemi’s remarks come on the heels of Nigeria’s disappointing 1-1 draw against Benin, which sealed their qualification for the 2025 AFCON in Morocco but also exposed several shortcomings following a 2-1 defeat to Rwanda.
With Nigeria set to face Rwanda again in March 2025, the stakes could not be higher, as both teams vie for a spot in the 2026 World Cup.
