Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has played down Nigeria’s emphatic 4-0 win over Mozambique at AFCON 2025, insisting the result does not change the team’s focus or standards despite the dominant scoreline.
The Super Eagles booked a comfortable victory in the round of 16 after Victor Osimhen scored twice, while Ademola Lookman and Akor Adams also found the net, Footballrover reports.

The goals sealed a routine win that showed Nigeria’s attacking strength on the night.
However, the match was not without controversy. In the 64th minute, with the Eagles already leading 3-0, Osimhen was seen confronting Lookman inside the opposition box.
The striker appeared frustrated over a scoring chance he believed should have been passed to him, feeling he was in a better position to score.

Osimhen’s reaction drew attention as he also showed visible frustration towards his teammates. The situation escalated briefly, with Wilfred Ndidi stepping in, but it solved nothing.
After the incident, Osimhen’s involvement dropped noticeably. He reduced his movement, stopped chasing loose balls, and appeared disengaged from play. Minutes later, he asked to be substituted and was replaced by Moses Simon.
When questioned about the on-field incident and its possible impact on the squad, Chelle made it clear the matter would remain private.
“This is a question about my management, and what happened in the pitch will stay in the group; I don’t need to tell anyone what happened.
I keep that for me, and everything that happened in the group stays in the group, so we will see after that, and we will talk,” Chelle said.
Despite the commanding scoreline, the Super Eagles coach was keen to manage expectations. Chelle expressed satisfaction with the result but stressed that the team must remain grounded.
“I’m happy about this game winning by four goals, but in reality we didn’t do anything special; we just won one game. If we want to be ambitious, we need to continue to improve and keep this quality on the pitch.
My job now is to keep the players very focused on their training sessions and behaviour,” he noted.
The Super Eagles will now turn their attention to the next stage of AFCON 2025, where they will battle either Algeria or DR Congo in Marrakech on Saturday, with Chelle determined to keep his squad disciplined, focused, and hungry for more progress.
