AC Milan manager Sergio Conceição has shed light on why Samuel Chukwueze’s recent bench role was actually a positive sign for both the player and the team, following his standout performance against Bologna in Friday’s 3-1 comeback win at the San Siro.
The Super Eagles winger, who had “George” on the back of his jersey as part of Milan’s Mother’s Day tribute, came off the bench and played a key role in all three goals, directly providing the final assist in the dying minutes, Footballrover reports.
“He wanted to prove me wrong” – Conceição on Samuel Chukwueze
When asked if Chukwueze was a viable option going forward, Conceição praised the Nigerian’s hunger and attitude:
“I have embraced everyone. He should be given a very positive word, like the others who came in. He hasn’t played for a long time and wanted to show the coach that I was wrong not to put him in. It’s a good sign to have these doubts in the starting line-up,” he said as quoted by Milan Post.
The coach further emphasised that Samuel Chukwueze made the most of his chance, noting,
“He must be happy; he gave something more. He hadn’t played for a while, but when he came in, he wanted to show his coach that he wanted to do well,” he added.
Chukwueze replaced Alex Jiménez in the 65th minute and immediately changed the tempo.
His clever dribble and pass contributed to the final goal, sealing Milan’s hard-earned win and showing why many fans are calling for more minutes for the former Villarreal star.
A summer exit looms, but his assist against Bologna sends a message
Despite delivering a strong assist against Bologna and influencing the game with every touch, Chukwueze’s future at Milan remains uncertain.
With Matteo Sottil often preferred over him this season, a summer departure is likely. Still, his performance was a timely reminder of his quality, obviously.
Wherever Samuel Chukwueze goes next, Footballrover will be tracking his progress. One thing is clear: when given the chance, he delivers.
