Rivers Angels’ hopes of winning a title this season are now in their hands as they crushed Delta Queens on Sunday to reach the President Federation Cup final after an intense, end-to-end semifinal game.
The eight-time champions of the Federation Cup were no strangers to the Delta ladies before coming into the clash, Footballrover reports.
Both sides have faced each other in the Nigeria Women’s Premier League this season, with the PH Ladies snatching a draw in Asaba and winning in Port Harcourt.
Coach Whyte Ogbonda side went on to prove why they are a dominant force in the President Federation Cup, sealing off a 2-1 win in the South South Derby.
This thrilling match between the Jewels of Rivers and Delta Queens kicked off at 9 a.m. at the Awka Stadium.
It took Rivers Angels barely six minutes into the game to humble their opponents with quick-fire double goals.
Blessing Okpe, who scored a hat-trick against Osun Babes to seal their passage into the semi-final clash, did it again this time, scoring the opener just four minutes into the game courtesy of a brilliant cross from Aminat Folorunsho.
Two minutes later, Rivers Angels made it goal number two, and this time around it’s Peace Effiong, who scored from a goalmouth scramble to double the lead.
Just a minute before the interval, Florence Alexander appeared to have handled the ball in her 18-yard box, and the centre referee awarded Delta Queens a penalty.
Okpala Maureen stepped up and converted from the spot to pull one back for Delta Queens heading into the halftime break.
There wasn’t much to talk about in the second period of the match as neither team was able to take advantage of their opportunities, and Rivers Angels managed to hang on to their narrow victory until the very end.
The FA Cup final will now feature the new vision queens, and it’s all set and done.
