In a shocking revelation on Wednesday evening, Bayelsa Queens announced that the team have officially withdrawn from the Betsy Obaseki Women Football Tournament (BOWFT).
The decision was made public by the management of the Prosperity Girls in response to a letter from the Edo State Football Association (ESFA).
The letter came in the wake of a protest lodged by Delta Queens regarding Bayelsa Queens’ use of two players, Footballrover reports
The chairman of Bayelsa Queens, Pastor Robin Apreala, expressed the club’s disappointment with the tournament’s organizers, stating that they were not granted a fair hearing.
Pastor Apreala pointed out that the BOWFT is a preseason competition, allowing clubs to utilize any willing player.
In his words;
“Bayelsa Queens FC of Yenagoa will be withdrawing from the tournament, despite having already qualified for the Quarter Finals. This decision is a direct result of what we perceive as a one-sided judgment by the organizers, favoring Delta Queens without affording us a fair opportunity to present our case.”
He further stressed;
“Goodbye to BOWFT, and from now on, Bayelsa Queens FC will decline any further invitations from them.”
This announcement comes as a shock, especially since Bayelsa Queens had a strong showing in the tournament, winning two of their matches.
Their victory over Nasarawa Amazon, with Blessing Illivieda delivering a remarkable Woman of the Match performance, and their narrow win against Confluence Queens thanks to Aderemi Mari’s lone goal, had generated excitement among fans.
Bayelsa Queens’ withdrawal will surely leave fans wondering how this decision will impact the rest of the Betsy Obaseki Women Football Tournament, and whether further developments will arise from this unexpected twist.
