Oriola Sunday’s double delight not enough

The match, part of Japan J-League 2’s 19th round, saw Sunday make his mark early. He opened the scoring for Omiya Ardija in the 14th minute.

Despite being sidelined for some previous matches, Oriola has steadily built his season’s tally, now reaching three goals in 10 appearances, alongside one assist.

His first goal against V-Varen Nagasaki was a sign of things to come, putting Omiya Ardija in a strong position.

V-Varen Nagasaki, however, were quick to respond. Taisei Abe found the net in the 38th minute, leveling the score.

Just before halftime, Omiya’s Brazilian star Caprini regained the lead, making it 2-1 at the break.

The second half started with a bang, as Wakaba Shimoguchi equalised for V-Varen Nagasaki early on.

But just three minutes later, Oriola Sunday struck again, bagging his second goal of the game and handing Omiya a 3-2 advantage.

Sunday was substituted in the 62nd minute, and while his fantastic efforts had put Omiya Ardija in a winning position, V-Varen Nagasaki fought back.

Juanma Delgado scored a vital equaliser in the 80th minute, ensuring the points were shared in a dramatic 3-3 draw at the Peace Stadium.

This result marks Omiya Ardija’s second consecutive draw and their third in the last four matches.

This string of draws, including a 1-1 home draw with Ehime and a 2-0 win over Tochigi SC, has impacted their standing.

Oriola Sunday and his teammates currently sit in third place with 36 points, just two points behind second-placed Mito and the league leaders, Chiba.

Omiya Ardija’s season record now stands at 10 wins, six draws, and three defeats from 19 games.

Their next challenge will be a home fixture against Sagan Tosu. The performance of Oriola Sunday could continue to be a key factor as Omiya Ardija pushes for promotion should he be called upon.
