NPFL: Rivers United come from behind to salvage draw against Remo Stars

On Sunday, the best of Nigerian football was on display as Chijioke Akuneto scored just before halftime to help Rivers United salvage a 1-1 draw against Remo Stars in their Nigeria Professional Football League clash.

At the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne, Gbenga Ogunbote’s side showed plenty of promise, and Chijioke Akuneto’s late first-half goal was no less than Coach Stanley Eguma’s Rivers United merited for their character, fight, and passion throughout.NPFL: Rivers United come from behind to salvage draw against Remo Stars

Rivers United took control of the game early on, with Morice Chukwu operating at the base of midfield, and pressed high up the field in numbers, which almost paid off as early as the 7th minute when an unmarked Chijioke Akuneto’s header from 8 yards out was parried for a corner kick by Remo Stars goalkeeper Kayode Bankole.

The hosts took the lead in the 10th minute when forward Andy Okpe got on the end of a cross from Ifegwu Ojukwu to put Remo Stars ahead.

Rivers United’s Ishaq Kayode had a chance to equalise, but his goal-bound attempt was deflected into the side net.

Rivers United pulled level in the 43rd minute when Chijioke Akuneto’s equaliser and 4th goal of the season came from a Nyima Nwagua assist.
