Sevilla sporting director Victor Orta has admitted that signing Super Eagles star Kelechi Iheanacho last summer was a major blunder.
The Nigerian forward joined the Spanish side after leaving Leicester City, but his time in La Liga has been disappointing, Footballrover reports.
Sevilla mistake signing: What went wrong?
In the last two years, Kelechi Iheanacho has struggled to find stability.
After barely playing in Leicester’s Championship-winning run, he moved to Sevilla hoping for a fresh start.
However, he managed just one La Liga goal in 11 appearances—most of them from the bench—despite showing flashes in the Copa del Rey with three goals against lower-tier opposition.
Orta didn’t mince words when discussing the Sevilla mistake signing at a press conference unveiling new coach Joaquin Caparros.
“A mistake I made, a very serious one. I also want to clarify that the first two strikers were brought in as complements, to be practically the third striker, because there was a starter like Youssef and a striker who later appeared, like Isaac.
But it’s clear that betting on Kelechi this season has been a mistake, and we will analyse why we made it—and we are doing so now,” he said.
New chapter at Middlesbrough for Kelechi Iheanacho
After failing to make an impact in Spain, Kelechi Iheanacho joined Middlesbrough in the English Championship.
His first few games were rough, but he recently netted his first goal in a 2-1 win over Oxford United and added two assists against Blackburn, suggesting signs of revival.
Still, the pressure is on. The Sevilla mistake signing could either mark a turning point or a sharp decline in the 27-year-old’s career.
Iheanacho needs to finish strong this season to secure a fresh opportunity—either by staying at Middlesbrough or attracting new suitors.
For now, his focus must be on proving Sevilla wrong.
