Rivers United continued their winning streak in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) with a 3–1 home victory against Bendel Insurance at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium.
The highlight of the match was midfielder Iyowuna Douglas, who delivered two decisive assists to help his team claim full bragging rights in the South-South derby, Footballrover reports.
Iyowuna Douglas: “What’s in you is in you.”
Douglas, making his third appearance for Rivers United, expressed gratitude after the match.
“I also want to thank my coaches for giving me this opportunity. It’s football. I know I have something big, and I decided to just show it and bring it out, and the performance, it just happened because what’s in you is in you,” he told Footballrover.
Douglas’ confidence was clear in his approach to the game. When asked about his double assists, he added,
“I had the conviction in mind before coming into the game that I would get either a goal or an assist, and it came out that way. And it happens to be double. I give God all the glory.”
Clinical Creativity Sees Rivers United Secure Victory
After a goalless first half, Douglas provided the opening goal for Rivers United in the 53rd minute, delivering a precise corner that Chijioke Mbaoma converted with a header.
Later, Wisdom Samuel doubled the lead in the 81st minute, again assisted by Douglas, displaying his playmaking skills in the midfield.
Bendel Insurance briefly sparked hope with a late goal in the 89th minute, but Samson Obi, who had entered the match just 12 minutes earlier, sealed the 3–1 win with a clinical finish following a rebound.
This victory marked back-to-back home wins for Rivers United and sealed their position at the top of the NPFL table ahead of a challenging away schedule.
Praise from Finidi George Boosts Young Midfielder
Rivers United head coach Finidi George lauded Douglas’ performance, emphasising the importance of making the most of opportunities.
“He’s doing well. We’ll keep encouraging him. I told the players that at the beginning of the season everybody will have their own chance to play on this team.
It’s how you use your own opportunity that matters. His time has come, and he’s doing very well, so we’ll keep encouraging him,” George said.
Douglas’ standout display shows his potential as a key creative force for Rivers United, and fans will be eager to see if he can maintain this momentum in upcoming away fixtures against Shooting Stars and Ikorodu City.
