Fulham manager Marco Silva has shed light on the reasons behind the limited game time for 27-year-old Harry Wilson, citing the consistent performance of Alex Iwobi.
Silva’s comments come after Fulham’s thrilling 2-1 victory over Brentford, where Wilson scored both a dramatic equaliser and the winning goal, Footballrover reports.
Yet, despite Wilson’s heroics, Silva emphasised Iwobi’s crucial role and form as key factors in shaping his current team selection.
In Monday’s match at Craven Cottage, Wilson came off the bench in the 82nd minute with Fulham trailing by a goal.
Just minutes later, he delivered an extraordinary backheel flick for the equaliser in stoppage time before netting the winning goal in the 97th minute with a precise header from Antonee Robinson’s cross.
The performance shows Wilson’s ability to influence games, yet Silva revealed that competition for starting spots remains fierce.
Alex Iwobi and Fulham’s competitive midfield
The Fulham boss praised Iwobi, highlighting his importance in the squad’s dynamics.
Silva pointed out that Iwobi, along with Adama Traore and summer signing Emile Smith Rowe, has been instrumental in Fulham’s midfield success this season.
He added that the Nigerian midfielder’s work rate and versatility have made him a difficult player to leave out.
“Adama started to have a very good impact in the beginning of the season; Alex has been one of the best players so far in our team, too. And, of course, with the impact of Emile so far, it’s not easy to find space for everybody. Because of that, it’s been tough for him,” the gaffer said.
Silva also expressed his belief that Wilson will eventually secure more playing time, especially given his recent strong performances for the Welsh national team.
Since joining, Iwobi has appeared in all 10 Premier League games, contributing two goals and one assist.
Silva’s comments indicate that, for now, Iwobi’s solid performances will continue to earn him a well-deserved place in Fulham’s starting eleven.
