Nigerian football legend Nwankwo Kanu is calling for action, urging the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to make Augustine Eguavoen the permanent coach of the Super Eagles.
In a recent interview with Brila FM, Nwankwo voiced his frustration over the NFF’s indecision, insisting that Eguavoen’s recent success with the team warrants more than an interim title, Footballrover reports.
Appointed as caretaker coach after a failed bid to secure Bruno Labbadia due to tax issues, Augustine has overseen an impressive start with the Super Eagles.
With three wins and a draw in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, the team remains unbeaten under his guidance.
This record has stirred up support for him from notable voices in Nigerian football, including former Super Eagles captain Mikel Obi, who praised Eguavoen’s leadership on his “Obi One” podcast.
Kanu and others rally behind Eguavoen’s appointment
Kanu, who currently chairs Enyimba FC, believes the NFF is wasting time searching for “the right one” when Eguavoen’s record speaks for itself.
He pointed out that the 59-year-old has the experience and results to justify a permanent role.
“If I were the NFF president, I’d have given him the job by now. What are they waiting for? Are we waiting for him to lose two matches before we say he should go? This is overdue; they have to act.
“They brought someone in; he’s doing well, winning matches—what else are you looking for?” When coaches are doing well, you keep them.
“If they’re still looking for the ‘right one,’ when is that going to come? We don’t have time, qualifications here and there,” Papilo told Brila FM.
Recall that Augustine led the Super Eagles during the 2021 AFCON, where they bowed out in the round of 16 to Tunisia.
Despite that setback, his leadership style has continued to resonate with fans and football insiders who want stability for the team ahead of crucial international tournaments.
