England boss Gareth Southgate has graciously acknowledged Spain dominance after his team’s narrow defeat in the Euro 2024 final.
Spain emerged victorious with a 2-1 win, and Southgate praised them as “the best team in the tournament.”
Despite a valiant effort from the Three Lions, Spain held the film to snatch the title in West Germany, Footballrover reports.
The Spanish side dominated possession throughout the match, displaying their signature passing style, and ultimately found the breakthrough late in the second half.
England’s manager, Gareth Southgate, blamed their Euro 2024 final defeat to Spain on their inability to maintain possession of the ball.
Hoping to improve on their last result, England were ultimately defeated by La Roja by a score of 2-1 on Sunday.
After a scoreless first half, Nico Williams broke the deadlock for Spain early in the second.
England responded with a substitute, Cole Palmer, who equalised.
However, Spain secured the victory with a late goal from Mikel Oyarzabal.
Speaking after the game, a visibly disappointed Southgate acknowledged Spain’s superiority.
Southgate told the BBC that England had competed until the very end of the final but admitted they failed to keep possession of the ball well enough on the day.
He acknowledged that even though they defended well at times, the opponent’s pressing was very effective, making it difficult to break free from that pressure, which they unfortunately weren’t able to achieve.
The English coach went on to explain that the opponent’s control of the game could be draining, but despite that, they were still in contention when they equalised, keeping the outcome uncertain.
βAs always in these games, itβs fine margins, but they were the best team in the tournament. Over the piece, they deserved it.β

When you look back at Spain’s record, they just claimed their fourth European Championship title, while England unfortunately extended their unwanted record of consecutive Euro final losses.
England holds the unfortunate record of playing the most games (45) in the UEFA EURO without ever winning the championship.
They’ve surpassed Belgium, the runner-up for most appearances without a title, by a significant margin (19 games).
