Rivers Angels head coach, Whyte Ogbonda, has announced his departure from the club after just one season.
This news comes shortly after Ogbonda led the Jewel of Rivers to their historic ninth President Federation Cup title, his first major trophy as a head coach, Footballrover reports.
Ogbonda’s time with Rivers Angels was an incredible one.
He successfully ended his personal trophy drought by guiding them to the 2024 President Federation Cup victory, a 1-0 win against Naija Ratels.
However, their league campaign ended as runners-up to Edo Queens in the 2023–2024 NWFL Premiership season.
A Proven Leader Departs:
Ogbonda’s coaching pedigree precedes him. Before joining Rivers Angels, he led Ibom Angels to consecutive Federation Cup finals in 2018 and 2019.
He also served as assistant coach at Rivers Angels during their 2014 FA Cup victory.
Ogbonda narrowly missed out on a trophy with Confluence Queens, reaching the 2019 NWFL Premiership Super Four final, where they were defeated by, you guessed it, – Rivers Angels.
Following his departure from Rivers Angels, rumours suggest Ogbonda is set to take the helm at Bayelsa Queens for the upcoming 2024–2025 season.
This move is aimed at filling the void left by the passing of their former coach, Domo Okara.
Reports indicate his official unveiling by Bayelsa Queens management will take place on Tuesday in Yenagoa, the state capital.
Whyte Ogbonda’s departure from Rivers Angels will surely be felt.
While his short stint brought a long-awaited trophy, his leadership and experience will undoubtedly be missed.
