The new Super Eagles coach has set his sights on leading Nigeria to the 2026 FIFA World Cup and adding value to the team, Footballrover reports.

The 53-year-old former Enyimba coach, who took over the reins on an interim basis after Jose Peseiro’s contract expired, was unveiled as the permanent head coach of the three-time AFCON winners.

Finidi’s first target is to secure qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup by winning the upcoming matches against South Africa and the Benin Republic.

My first target is to make sure that we are in line to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup by winning the upcoming two matches against South Africa and the Benin Republic,” Finidi said in a statement released by the NFF.

With the 2025 AFCON qualifiers also approaching, Finidi emphasised the need for preparation and hard work.

“I will work very hard to add value to the team,” he added.

Finidi’s integration into the team as head coach is expected to be seamless, having developed a good relationship with the majority of the players during his time as assistant and interim coach.

Finidi believes his approach remains consistent, and he’s confident that the players, being professionals with European experience, will adapt easily.

“I will try my best to ensure the team starts functioning properly and we start winning games again,” he concluded.

Nigeria currently sits third in their World Cup qualifying group with two points from two games after disappointing draws against Zimbabwe and Lesotho.

With Finidi’s appointment and his lofty goals, the team’s chances of making it to the FIFA World Cup in 2026 have been given fresh life.
