Rivers United had not found the back of the net at Niger Tornadoes in an NPFL fixture since January 2019.
That all changed on Monday afternoon, when ex-Super Eagles coach Finidi George masterminded a dramatic victory in their Matchday Eight clash, breaking a long-standing goal drought in style, Footballrover reports.
Finidi George’s trip to Minna proved fruitful, as his team snatched all three points from their hosts to maintain their impressive form this season.
The win underlined their status as one of only two NPFL sides yet to suffer a defeat in the ongoing campaign.
Ex-Super Eagles coach Finidi George breaks Niger Tornadoes curse
The Garden City side, under the guidance of the ex-Super Eagles coach Finidi George, are enjoying one of their best seasons in recent memory.
With six wins and two draws so far, they have established themselves as NPFL title favourites.
Monday’s 1-0 win over Niger Tornadoes marked their second away win of the season, further boosting their title hopes.
Seiyefa Jackson opened the scoring just two minutes into the second half, finally breaking the five-year scoring drought for Rivers United at Niger Tornadoes’ home ground.
Jackson’s goal was historic as well, making him the first Pride of Rivers player to score at the Bako Stadium since Ossy Martins netted an equaliser in a 1-1 draw back five years ago.
The game took a dramatic turn in stoppage time when Emmanuel Nnaji received a straight red card, reducing the Port Harcourt outfit to 10 men.
Despite the disadvantage, the Port Harcourt-based side held on for the win, securing all three points and extending their unbeaten run.
Rivers United entered this fixture on the back of a 2-0 win over Shooting Stars, and, with this victory, they now sit two points clear of Remo Stars at the top of the NPFL table.
Their next challenge will be a home clash against NPFL newcomers El-Kanemi Warriors, the second team yet to taste defeat this season.
With ex-Super Eagles coach Finidi George at the helm, Rivers United have their sights firmly set on maintaining their undefeated run and pushing for the league title.
