In a gripping encounter at the Akure Sports Complex, Enugu Rangers battled Sunshine Stars to a thrilling 2-2 draw during the NPFL match day 8 showdown.
Coach Fidelis Ilechukwu didn’t mince words, highlighting his team’s resilient spirit but pinpointing defensive lapses as the reason behind conceding cheap goals, Footballrover reports
Former league top-scorer Godwin Obaje swiftly put Rangers ahead with a precise header, capitalizing on Isaac Saviour’s well-executed free kick early in the game.
However, Ibrahim Yusuf’s unmarked strike for Sunshine Stars brought the hosts back into contention, setting the stage for an intense clash.
The first half ended on level terms, but the Owena Whales gained momentum in the second half, seizing control of the midfield and eventually taking the lead through Moses Omodumueke’s well-placed shot in the 81st minute.

Jubilation erupted among the home fans as victory seemed imminent.
Yet, the Flying Antelopes had other plans. In a dramatic twist, substitute Jonas Emmanuel swooped in during the dying moments, capitalizing on Isaac Saviour’s precision pass to stylishly net the equalizer, stunning the home side and securing a hard-fought draw for Rangers.
After the match, Coach Fidelis Ilechukwu told the club’s media that it was a challenging encounter against a formidable opponent.
He praised his players for adhering to the team’s motto of never giving up until the final whistle, despite conceding cheap goals.
“It was a very difficult match against a quality side but as our slogan says, we never say die until the final whistle and I give my players kudos as we keep working on the areas of deficiency. My defense gave away cheap goals but we keep working until we get it right,” he said.
Despite the disappointment of conceding late, Rangers maintain their hold on the third spot in the league table with 14 points from eight matches.
