Abakaliki FC fans have one big reason to cheer despite the heartbreak in the President Federation Cup final — Ebonyi state governor has stepped in with a rare promise that’s changing everything for the club.

After losing the 2025 Federation Cup final to Kwara United, Abakaliki still found hope thanks to the state governor, Francis Nwifuru, Footballrover reports.
Ebonyi Governor’s reward inspires Abakaliki FC
The team captain Cyril Timothy openly praised the governor for rewarding the players with ₦1 million each and keeping their salaries running until November 2025, despite relegation.

At a special banquet in Abakaliki, the governor also donated to the club’s coaches, non-technical staff, the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria, and the Supporters Club.

NNL slot promise sparks fresh dreams
The biggest headline, however, was the governor’s bold promise. Abakaliki may skip the Nationwide League One after all, as the governor plans to buy an NNL slot to keep the team in Nigeria’s second tier.

Captain Timothy summed it up best while speaking exclusively to Completesports:
“The governor has done so well for us. We’re grateful for what he’s done, even though we didn’t win the cup,” he said.
“We didn’t win the cup, and he still did all these for us. You can imagine what would have happened if we had won. We’re grateful to him. The most important thing is his promise to buy an NNL slot so that we can still play in the NNL next season. We can’t thank him enough,” he added.

With governor Nwifuru’s support and NNL dream in the bag, the Abakaliki team is about to fight for top-flight football once again.
