Nigerian forward Cyriel Dessers could not have asked for a better way to mark a significant achievement in his football career, delivering the match winner on Rangers milestone.
The Super Eagles striker delivered a dramatic stoppage-time winner to seal a thrilling 4-3 comeback victory against Dundee, making his 100th appearance for the club even more special, Footballrover reports.
But it was not an easy ride—Rangers had to claw their way back from behind in a pulsating contest at Dens Park.
Cyriel Dessers: The hero in a comeback for the ages
Rangers found themselves in deep trouble early on, trailing 2-0 before they could even settle into the game.
The hosts took full advantage of defensive lapses, leaving Barry Ferguson’s men with a mountain to climb.
Despite a James Tavernier-inspired fightback, which saw the captain’s cross force an own goal from Joe Shaughnessy, Dundee extended their lead to 3-1 through Scott Tiffoney.
However, Rangers refused to back down. Two stunning strikes from Tavernier and Tom Lawrence levelled the score, setting the stage for a defining moment.
It was then that Cyriel Dessers stepped up, displaying his composure under pressure to slot home the winner deep into stoppage time.
Speaking to RangersTV after the match, Dessers shared his excitement:
“It was very nice to score so late, but the 90 minutes before that were not that nice. At the end, if you can score like that in your 100th game, it is a very nice feeling.”
A milestone moment for the Super Eagles star
The late goal took Dessers’ tally to 45 goals in 100 games for Rangers, an impressive record that shows his attacking prowess.
Reflecting on the decisive moment, he credited his teammates, particularly Tavernier, for setting up the opportunity.
“I know Tav and his qualities, and he can give these balls, and I think it got carried a little bit by the wind. The defender could only get a touch, and I had good control on my chest and then slipped it past the keeper. It was an unbelievable moment, scoring an injury-time winner.”
Despite the elation, Dessers acknowledged that Rangers must avoid slow starts and unnecessary comebacks in future matches.
“I still can’t comprehend everything that happened; it was a rollercoaster again. Before you know it, you are 2-0 down, and then you know you have a steep hill to climb. We showed our mentality to come back, but we have done that too many times. It would be nice to get the first punch so they have to come onto us.”
With this milestone performance, Cyriel Dessers has once again proven his worth at Rangers despite being snubbed by the Super Eagles boss during their World Cup qualifying series.
However, as he and his teammates gear up for their next challenge, the focus will be on starting strong and making sure they control games rather than chasing them.
